If you’re the person tasked with managing that upcoming event for your business, company or brand, chances are, you’ve begun to consider having someone stand up and host it.
The Master of Ceremonies, MC or, Caberet-inspired “Emcee” is the one who’ll set the tone of the event, introduce and link any speakers together and keep the whole show on time.
More importantly, they will act as a temporary ambassador of your organisation.
Before making your choice, take stock of how you want to see your organisation represented, and then, ask yourself the following questions:
Does your MC..
attend a pre-event briefing or video call to get up to speed with your brand, messaging and intention behind the event?
carefully pre-read, familiarise and even memorise your rundown and script?
double-check pronunciations, to avoid the awkwardness and embarrassment that comes from getting names of people and localities wrong?
research your guest speakers and introduce them with warmth and authority?
acknowledge important stakeholders, like sponsors and clients ensuring they’re left feeling confident in their investment?
stay on top of current events and understand any political considerations to properly represent your brand?
create a mood that reflects the intention of your event?
make eye contact with your guests and make them feel part of something?
Smile? 😊
Choosing the right MC will add to the overall success of your event. Leaving attendees feeling included, informed and recruited as new, loyal fans of your organisation and everything it does.
Whether you decide to give the job to somebody in-house or bring in a contractor, be sure the person you choose has the confidence, experience and diligence to properly execute all that hard work you’ve done behind the scenes.
After all, you only get one chance to get it right!

I’m also teaching an upcoming workshop, that’ll teach aspiring MCs, or those keen to do the job in house, what’s required. You can book your place here.
